Own an htc G1? Would you recommend it?
I am in the market for a new cell phone and while I definitely can not afford the new Droid (which I really want) the g1 by htc is more in my price range. Ive heard some bad things though like that the phone is awkward to hold (qwerty keyboard is hard to use) and the battery stinks. If you own the g1 I’d love your opinion. I also don’t want to get a phone that will be completely outdated in a couple of months so anyone who’s had experience with this phone help me out! If you don’t have anything good to say about can someone recommend a different phone, I need both touch screen and a full qwerty keyboard.
I owned a G1 for about a year and a half, just sold it when I upgraded to the Nexus One.
Now, the Nexus is a “better” phone because it’s newer and faster, but I loved the G1. The keyboard issue isn’t one of awkwardness, but using the qwerty keyboard does take a bit of adjustment. The reason is that when you slide the screen up to expose the keyboard, the “lip” of the phone where the control buttons are sticks up above the right end of the keyboard. All you need to do is get your hands adjusted to working around it. I was able to in pretty short order, and I never had any issues.
I didn’t find the battery life any worse than any other smart phone that does a lot of stuff. Network capable phones with big bright screens and all kinds of geek features will *always* kill a battery if you overwork them. Keeping the screen brightness down when you’re idle and turning off stuff you’re not using (i.e., Bluetooth, wi-fi, etc) will prolong the battery. I bought a couple of spares anyway…they’re not that expensive now and they were handy to have.
You have a great choice of apps in the Android Market now, far more than i did when I got my G1 in 2008. If you’re adventurous, the phone is easy to root and modify with all kinds of customized ROMS. In fact, the ROM developer I used the most (cyanongen) is allegedly working on a 2.1 version of Android for the G1.
In all, if you’re interested in one, I’d recommend it.
